Xaymaca is a film director and journalist based in East London.
Xaymaca Awoyungbo has combined his love for filmmaking and journalism at the start of his portfolio career. In 2023 he won Chelsea FC’s inaugural Blue Creator Fund and directed a documentary about the club’s relationship with race and racism. “Blue is the Colour” amassed more than 300,000 YouTube and earned Awoyungbo a positive review in The Athletic.
Following the success of the film, Awoyungbo began working for The Guardian as a freelance multimedia journalist. He has written articles on everything from the legacy of Emma Hayes to the importance of studying humanities subjects at school. His diverse skillset has also enabled him to edit videos for the reactive news video team and the It’s Complicated team, where he produced a short video about the history of Nike’s Cortez sneakers.
During this period, Awoyungbo has repeatedly worked on videos with V&A East after joining their youth collective in 2023. His latest film for the museum tells the story of food, culture and the kitchen and how it links their Frankfurt Kitchen installation. It will be available to view in V&A East Storehouse from 31st May 2025.
Outside of work for brands, Awoyungbo also creates own projects. His Lonely in London series, about his experiences as a young Londoner, attracted attention from Copa90, who asked him to create a Lonely in London video for their Instagram page.
Awoyungbo’s latest project is a documentary called “Made in Walthamstow”, which tells the story of Walthamstow FC’s unique kit collaboration with the William Morris Gallery. He sees it as a love letter to Walthamstow and a celebration of the community. It will be screened in Walthamstow throughout April 2025 before being released on YouTube at the end of the month.
